Ella Lewis, Secretary of State for the Commonwealth of Kentucky, 1928-32, was born in Leitchfield, Kentucky, December 26, 1878. She was the daughter of Mary E. (Kirkland) and James Franklin Lewis. She was educated in the common schools, at Western Kentucky State Normal School, and at Transylvania College. She never married.
Lewis served for eight years as superintendent of the Grayson County school system. A Democrat, in 1927 she was elected Secretary of State and served during the administration of Flem D. Sampson, a Republican. She also spent three years working for the Kentucky Department of Public Welfare. She died in Louisville of uremia on December 16, 1953.
